Europe’s first Zika-caused microcephaly baby born in Spain

Europe’s first baby with the microcephaly birth defect caused by Zika has been born in Catalonia. The mother had been diagnosed with the virus in May after travelling to South America.

 

Physician Felix Castillo said the baby was born with a small head circumference typical of Zika and that it was “stable and has not required any specific resuscitation,” according to The Local.

 

The child was delivered via caesarean section at Vall D’Hebron hospital in Barcelona – the first known case in Europe to go to term.

 

The mother is reported to have contracted Zika while in Latin America.

Zika virus spreading in Europe as 1st person tests positive in Denmark

One person has tested positive in Denmark for the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which has caused severe birth defects in Latin America, Danish media has reported. The new case comes after Italy, Spain, the UK and Switzerland registered several people infected with the disease.

 

A Danish tourist contracted the virus while traveling through South and Central America, where Zika is spreading now. The patient is now being treated at the University hospital in Aarhus, Denmark's second-largest city.

 

The Dane arrived at the Department of Infectious Diseases with flu-like symptoms including fever, headache and muscle pain, but later tests revealed that the patient had been infected with the Zika virus.

 

But the virus is on the rise across the world and several cases have already appeared in Europe. On Tuesday, Italy reported several cases of the virus, saying that all the people infected had recently returned from Latin America and the Caribbean.

 

In addition, two cases were reported in Spain, three in the UK and two in Switzerland.

 

The Zika virus is contracted through mosquito bites and has been detected in human semen, but cannot be spread by human contact. [기사: RT]

Four people suffering from the Zika virus in Florida are probably the first cases contracted within the US, health officials say.

 

So far, cases outside of Latin America and the Caribbean, where the virus is prevalent, have been spread by travel to that region or sexual transmission.

 

The four Florida cases mean US mosquitoes may be carrying the virus.

Zika causes only a mild illness in most people but the virus has been linked to severe brain defects in newborns.

 

The Florida department of health said "a high likelihood exists that four cases are the result of local transmission", centred on one small area just north of downtown Miami.

 

More than 1,650 cases of Zika have so far been detected in the United States, but the Florida cases would be the first in the US not involving sexual contact or foreign travel.
